Getting By | Community Channel

Conversations with people in the United Kingdom struggling with considerable poverty after life crises, from cancer recovery to homelessness and chronic childhood illness. At the time, twenty percent of the country’s sixty million population lived within the government’s definition of poverty.

I’m admittedly proud that the film played a role in a change of the law. Margaret Kelly, one of the interviewees, campaigned for a winter fuel allowance for cancer survivors. She played Getting By while lobbying to politicians and civil servants at Belfast’s Stormont assembly. Two months later The Stormont Executive announced that the allowance would be granted to over 250,000 cancer survivors in Northern Ireland.

I produced, directed and filmed this programme.
