Harem: The Sultanate of the Women | Channel 4 / A&E

‘Best girl power’

The Sunday Times

‘Finely judged balance of story telling and analysis, a thoughtful textured piece of film-making’ Time Out

I pitched this idea to Channel 4 with Paladin Invision, and was delighted when it made it onto the terrestrial TV screen.

‘The Sultanate of the Women’ was a period in the sixteen and seventeenth centuries when concubines of the Ottoman Empire’s Imperial Harem, many of them former slave girls, ruled the largest Islamic empire the world had ever seen.

This drama-documentary is the story of the lives three of the most powerful of these women.

I worked as associate producer, directed various parts… and appear in some of the dramatisation scenes.
